What are the judges looking for?
‘A Taste for Life’ celebrates rich intense, moments in life. These are positive moments in life which provoke an intense emotional response. They are rich experiences which live long in your memory and provide unique experiences.
There are two age groups for entries, (i) 18-24 years and (ii) 25 years and over. Within each age group there are five categories to choose from to submit your entry

The Prize
For each age group there is a first prize of £5000 cash. Up to ten runners up from each age group will also be selected to feature alongside Magnum Photos in the exhibition ‘A Taste for Life’ taking place at Liberty of London in May 2009.
What the judges are not looking for
Diageo Great Britain is committed to responsible marketing practices. Therefore the judges cannot accept photographs which focus on children or young adults (people who are or look under the age of 25). Images which are of a sexual nature or feature scenes of violence, excessive drinking, alcohol misuse or drug abuse will also be rejected. People should not appear intoxicated in photos or engaged in unsafe behaviour while drinking or as a result of drinking. Images of anti-social or offensive activities will also be omitted.

Judging and the panel
A stellar panel of experts has been assembled to judge the competition including Stuart Franklin, President of Magnum, Jeremy Langmead, Editor of Esquire magazine, Alan Sparrow, Picture Editor of Metro and Nicky Catley, Picture Editor of The Daily Telegraph.
You will be judged on your interpretation of the brief, your interpretation of the category you have entered and the visual and stylish appeal of your image. The closing date for entries is 12th of April, 2009 when the judging panel will select from a shortlist of up to forty images for each age group. The pictures will also be displayed online where users can vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ to feature in the exhibition.
Meet the judging panel
Stuart Franklin
Stuart Franklin was born in Britain in 1956. He studied photography and film at West Surrey College of Art and Design and geography at the University of Oxford (BA and PhD). During the 1980s, he worked as a correspondent for Sygma Agence Presse in Paris before joining Magnum Photos in 1985.
Franklin’s coverage of the Sahel famine from 1984 to 1985 won him acclaim, but he is perhaps best known for his celebrated photograph of a man defying a tank in Tiananmen Square, China, in 1989, which won him a World Press Photo Award. Stuart is the current President of Magnum photos.
Jeremy Langmead
Jeremy Langmead became editor of Esquire magazine in 2007. His first edition of the magazine (September 2007) was widely praised by press and readers alike. Prior to joining Esquire, Jeremy was Editor-in-Chief of Wallpaper* magazine. Before that he was Features Editor at the Evening Standard, Editor of Nova magazine and Editor of Sunday Times Style.
Nicky Catley
Nicky is the Picture Editor of The Sunday Telegraph’s arts and reportage magazine, Seven. Since 2004 she has worked across the three Telegraph Magazines commissioning stories and portraits by photographers such as Alex Soth, Ziyah Gafic, and Stefan Ruiz. Assignments included documentary shoots in far flung corners of the globe from pandas in China to web-surfing nuns in Berkshire.
Alan Sparrow
Alan Sparrow is the Executive Picture Editor for Metro and has been with Metro for ten years. Before Metro, Alan worked on the picture desk of the Guardian newspaper for sixteen years.
Alan is the current chairman of the Picture Editors Guild which represents over 100 picture editors from the regional, international and national press and has been involved in judging of photography competitions since 1980.
Lara O’Shea
Lara is Brand Manager of Tanqueray gin in the UK. Prior to joining Diageo, she studied postgraduate photographic journalism at the University of Westminster, where she was taught by renowned Picture Editor, Colin Jacobson. Whilst a student, Lara was Picture and Fashion Editor on ‘Varsity’ newspaper in Cambridge.
Kristof Fahey
Vice President of Marketing, Yahoo! Europe. Kristof Fahey is responsible for overseeing all of Yahoo!’s brand development, customer insights and communications in Europe. He uses Flickr services to help share and manage his photographs.
